What is Accutane?
Accutane (isotretinoin) is a pill taken orally to treat individuals with very blemished skin. It's part of a group of drugs known as retinoids, which are related to vitamin A. It typically is only prescribed if other medicines for the skin have not been effective.
What Does It Do?
Accutane reduces the amount of oil (sebum) secreted by the skin, preventing pores from getting clogged and acne from occurring. It also reduces inflammation in the skin and speeds healing of current acne.
What Is It Used For?
Accutane is used primarily to treat severe nodulocystic acne (cystic acne). It is also used in cases of moderate acne that did not respond to other therapies. The goal is to achieve long-term and permanent improvement.
Side Effects:
Accutane is a strong medication and can cause some side effects, including:
Dry Skin: Dryness and peeling of the lips, face, and body skin.
Chapped Lips: A common side effect.
Nosebleeds: Due to dryness of mucous membranes.
Muscle and Joint Pain: Certain patients may get muscle and joint pain.
Liver Function Changes: May cause increased liver enzymes.
Mood Changes: Rarely, it can cause depression, anxiety, or mood changes.
Birth Defects: May cause severe birth defects when used in pregnancy.
Benefits:
Severe Acne Control: Helpful in resistant acne.
Long-Term Improvement: Almost no possibility of acne recurrence after treatment.
Smoothing of Skin Appearance: Reduces acne scars and smoothes the skin texture.
Who Should Not Take It?
Pregnant Women or Women Who Become Pregnant: Accutane can lead to serious birth deformities and cannot be taken by pregnant women.
Breast-Feeding Women: Should not be taken by breast-feeding women because of the possibility of passing into milk.
People Having Liver Disease: Should be administered cautiously or not at all as it can impact the liver functioning adversely.
Excessive Vitamin A: Not to be used with vitamin A supplements or other retinoids.
Depression and Psychiatric Disorders: To be used under medical supervision since there are possibilities of mood changes.
Accutane is an extremely potent drug to treat serious acne. However, due to its potential serious side effects, it must be used with caution and under medical supervision. It is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy. Regular follow-up visits with the physician and laboratory work are required during treatment.
